Clerkship Program Description : Medical Toxicology is the study of the effects of substances such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and environmental toxins on the human body. Examples can include intentional overdoses or substance abuse, occupational exposures, accidental ingestions, and envenomations. This rotation is based at the Northern New England Poison Center, the certified regional poison control and drug information center covering Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Rotators will have didactic sessions with Drs. Neavyn, Simone, Watson, &Malley including interactive case review and lectures. They will also attend the weekly emergency medicine residency conference at Maine Medical Center. Rotators will also spend time listening to incoming poison center phone calls with staff as well as learning about poison center operations. They will be asked to complete a small project while at the poison center as well as present mini-topics as appropriate. When available, rotators have the opportunity to take part in bedside consultations at Maine Medical Center. Opportunities exist to become involved in research, outreach, and administrative projects. This is an enrichment elective.
